SCIENCE INVESTIGATIONS FOR KEY STAGE 2 SATs
Newton Field Centre specialises in running practical courses to support the science and geography curricula taught in schools. In 2010 - 2011 the science teachers at Newton Field Centre are offering one day courses based on investigations designed to reinforce the correct approach to formulating and investigating scientific questions.
The examples outlined below are based on QCA units which, ideally, require the combination of practical field work and classroom follow up that the centre is experienced in providing. All programmes start with an introduction to the field centre and advice on health and safety.

Rocks and soils
This course is designed to support Science QCA units 3D and 3B. The content includes the principle of a fair test, how to use scientific equipment to compare the properties of different soils and how to interpret the results of experiments. Much of the practical work can be carried out in the centre’s laboratory, with short field excursions depending on the weather.

Habitats and Classification
A course based on Science QCA unit 4B and links with unit 6A. The content includes an introduction to deciduous woodland as a habitat, how to sample and record the plants and animals living in the wood, measurement of relevant environmental factors and identification and classification of plants and / or animals found. A field excursion to a local deciduous wood is followed by practical work in the centre’s laboratory. The course can also be based on grassland or freshwater habitats if preferred.

River Geography and freshwater invertebrates
This course is based on the Geography QCA unit 14 and links with Science QCA units 4B and 6A. The content includes observing features of the River Ise and surrounding countryside near Newton, measuring river features using simple equipment and sampling freshwater invertebrates. The field excursion involves a walk through farmland to a suitable stretch of the river.

EXAMPLES OF OTHER COURSE TITLES

Interdependence and adaptation (QCA 6A)

Plant growth and flower structure

Life cycles and seed dispersal (QCA 5B)
